Written and Woven
My installation of handmade hanging cards, inspired by my connection to Chinese culture, explores the intimate relationship between language and emotion. Each card goes beyond the literal meaning of a Chinese character, using different materials, textures, and techniques to express its emotional and personal significance. By combining the physical structure of written language with abstract elements of memory and feeling, I aim to create a tactile and visual experience that reflects the personal significance of each character.
The installation consists of 27 cards in total: 12 small blank cards, 10 medium ones, and 5 large cards. The large cards represent emotions that are currently the most overwhelming and present in my life. The blank cards are just as important—they speak to the unknown. They represent the ambiguity of the future and serve as placeholders for growth, for feelings and words I haven’t yet fully grasped or named.
